When Should You Book a Wedding Celebrant in New Zealand?
You've got the ring, you've started talking dates, and perhaps you've fallen down a Pinterest rabbit hole or two. But have you thought about booking your celebrant yet?
If you're wondering how far in advance you need to book a marriage celebrant, the answer is that it really depends. Some couples book me more than a year ahead, others get in touch a few months out, and occasionally I'll hear from a couple who've decided they'd quite like to get married in the next few weeks. No judgement here!
As a Christchurch marriage celebrant, I work with couples planning all sorts of ceremonies, from personalised weddings filled with family, friends and stories, to simple registry-style ceremonies for those who want to make things official without a big wedding. The amount of planning involved can look quite different for each, so the best time to book really depends on what you're hoping to do.
You don't need a photographer, a florist, a fancy venue or even a big guest list to get married, But in New Zealand, you legally require a registered marriage celebrant (and two witnesses!). And if you've found a celebrant whose style you love and who feels like the right fit, I'd recommend getting in touch sooner rather than later. Here's why:
How far in advance should you book a wedding celebrant?
For a traditional wedding, I'd generally recommend starting your search around six to eighteen months before your wedding date. If you're planning a Saturday wedding during the busy summer season, or you've got your heart set on a particular celebrant, getting in touch earlier is a good idea.
Spring and summer are popular times to get married around Christchurch and Canterbury, especially for outdoor ceremonies. Saturdays can book up quickly, so it's worth getting your celebrant sorted early if you're planning a wedding during these months.
But here's the thing: you don't necessarily need a year to organise a wedding.
I've had couples book with me just a few months before their wedding, while others get in touch much closer to the date. If I have availability, I'm always happy to explore what's possible. You don't need to have everything planned months in advance to get the ball rolling.
My advice? Once you've settled on a date, get in touch. Even if your wedding is a little way off, or coming up sooner than you'd planned, it's always worth asking. I'd hate for you to miss out on a celebrant who feels like the right fit for you, only to find yourself stuck with someone who thinks love is like a butterfly is peak wedding poetry!
What if you want to get married in the next few weeks?
First of all, don't assume you've left it too late!
Not every couple wants a big wedding with a lengthy planning process. Some simply want to make things official, perhaps with a couple of witnesses or a small group of their favourite people, and then celebrate in their own way.
This is where my registry-style ceremony can be a lovely option.
I hear from couples who have decided they'd rather keep things simple, without the expense, expectations or months of organising that can come with a larger wedding. Sometimes they've been together for years and have simply decided the time feels right. Other times, they have a particular reason for wanting to get married sooner rather than later.
Whatever has brought you to that decision, there's no right or wrong way to do it.
If you're hoping to get married in the next few weeks, do get in touch with me! If you have a little flexibility around your date and location, I'm happy to see what I can make work.
You'll still need to allow enough time for the legal paperwork, and availability will depend on existing bookings and commitments. But if you're keen to make it happen, don't assume it's too late to get in touch. You might be closer to saying "I do" than you think!
Does the time of year make a difference?
Absolutely! If you're dreaming of a Saturday wedding in the middle of summer, you're probably not the only one!
November through March is a popular time to get married in Christchurch and Canterbury. The days are longer, the weather is (hopefully!) on your side, and outdoor ceremonies are a lovely option. It's also when celebrants' diaries can start filling up, particularly for those sought-after Friday and Saturday dates.
But don't rule out winter! There can be something really special about a winter wedding, whether it's a cosy indoor ceremony, a beautiful fireplace, or simply bringing everyone together without worrying about the summer heat. And with fewer couples choosing the cooler months, you may find you have more flexibility when it comes to dates and availability.
If you've got your heart set on a particular date, I'd suggest getting in touch early rather than crossing your fingers and hoping for the best.
The good news? If you're planning a weekday wedding, are flexible with your date, or are keeping things small and simple, you may have more options. Not every wedding needs months of planning, a Saturday booking and a spreadsheet that rivals a small business!
Ultimately, it comes down to the kind of wedding you want and how flexible you can be. And if you're not sure what's possible, just ask. I'm always happy to have a chat about your plans.
What do you need before booking a celebrant?
Good news: you don't need to have your entire wedding planned before you get in touch with a celebrant. You don't even need a Pinterest board full of ideas (although if you have one, I'm happy to hear about it!).
A few basics are helpful when you enquire with me:
Your date: Even if it's not set in stone, let me know what you're thinking.
Your location: Have you found the perfect spot, or are you still weighing up your options?
Your ceremony style: Are you imagining something personal, with your story woven through it, or a short and simple ceremony to make things official?
Your guest list: An approximate number is absolutely fine.
That's enough to get the conversation started. We can talk through what you have in mind, and I'll help you work out which ceremony option might suit you best. There's no need to have all the answers before you enquire.
If you'd like to go ahead, I'll talk you through the booking process. A deposit is required to secure your date, so keep in mind that an enquiry alone doesn't reserve your spot in my diary.
If you've found a celebrant whose style you love, it's worth making sure you understand their booking process and what you need to do to lock everything in. That way, you can tick one more thing off the wedding to-do list and get on with the fun stuff!
Do you need to have your whole wedding planned before booking a celebrant?
Absolutely not!
You can book your celebrant before you've chosen your flowers, found the perfect outfit or decided whether you're having a three-course dinner or fish and chips on the beach. You certainly don't need every last detail figured out before you start making enquiries.
In fact, getting your celebrant sorted early gives you more time to think about the part of the day where you actually get married, rather than leaving it until the end of your to-do list (remember - you legally need a marriage celebrant to get married!)
Some couples want a ceremony full of personal stories, meaningful moments and promises they've carefully thought about. Others want to keep things relaxed and uncomplicated, with a handful of their favourite people there to witness the occasion. Neither needs to be a bigger production than it has to be.
There's no wedding rulebook you need to follow, and your day doesn't have to look like anyone else's. My job is to help you create a ceremony that feels right for you, whether that's a little more involved or beautifully simple.
So, if you've got a date in mind and you're starting to picture how you'd like to get married, let’s have a chat!
Looking for a marriage celebrant in Christchurch?
Whether you're planning a wedding next summer, hoping to get married in a few months or wondering if you can organise something in the next few weeks, I'd love to hear what you have in mind.
Your wedding ceremony doesn't need to look or sound like anyone else's. Maybe you want to share your story, include the little details that make you you, and have your guests leave feeling like they've learnt something about your relationship. Or perhaps you'd rather keep things low-key, with just a handful of your favourite people there to witness the I do's. And if you're working to a tight timeframe, please don't assume I've already filled my diary. Get in touch and let's see what's possible.
You can take a look at my ceremony options or get in touch here to tell me a little about your plans.
You don't need a perfectly organised wedding or a list of decisions already made. Just a date (or a few possibilities), an idea of what you're after, and a willingness to start the conversation. I'll take it from there!
